Tattooed
_SCOBY LEATHER
Extinction VI explores ecological fragility and cultural narratives through the innovative use of tattooed bacterial cellulose panels as a medium of storytelling and biodesign. The project centers on the creation of ten bio-leather panels adorned with intricate tattoos depicting species threatened by climate change, highlighting the precarious balance of non-human life and humanity's shared responsibility toward the planet. Merging traditional fermentation processes with modern biofabrication and AI-assisted design, Extinction VI reflects on the impermanence of materials and challenges notions of durability in design. The work critiques Western consumerism while drawing from indigenous knowledge, emphasizing a shift from dominance to collaboration with living materials.
Exhibition
_EXTINCTION VI
Extinction VI was exhibited at ACADIA 2023: Habits of the Anthropocene and presented as part of the Bio-Calibrated: Tools and Techniques for Biodesign Practices symposium hosted by Central Saint Martins. The exhibit and subsequent presentation contextualized the project within critical discussions on impermanence, cultural identity, and bio-collaboration, underscoring its relevance in advancing sustainable and narrative-driven design practices.

_METHOD
SCOBY was grown over 28 days in controlled conditions using kombucha fermentation, with a solution of sugar, vinegar, tea, and starter culture poured into stainless steel trays. After harvesting, the panels underwent a series of chemical treatments, including sodium bicarbonate washing, glycerol soaking, and application of a commercial tanning agent, followed by heat pressing to enhance durability.
